Youth Suicide Statistics
- Youth suicide has tripled in Canada over the past 40 years. It is now the second leading cause of death among teenagers and young adults, after car accidents.
- Each year, on average, 294 Canadian youths (15-24 year-olds) die from suicide, which is 1/4 of all youth deaths. Many more attempt it. (Canadian Health Network, Health Canada)
- Suicide is the leading cause of death for First Nations people between the ages of 10 and 44. (Health Canada's Statistical Profile of First Nations Health, April 2003)
- Among native males, 15 to 24 years old, the suicide rate is 126 per 100,000 compared to 24 per 100,000 for the same age group among the general population.
- Among young First Nation women, the suicide rate is 35 per 100,000 versus only 5 per 100,000 for non-aboriginal women.
